POLL

Support for Sweden Olympic boycott weakens

More than half of Swedes are opposed to a political boycott of the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Beijing, according to a poll published Wednesday in the daily Svenska Dagbladet (SvD).

Only one week ago, a separate poll conducted by Novus Opinion for TV4 showed that only 45 percent of Swedes were against an boycott of official ceremonies at the Games.

Fifty-five percent of the 1,000 people polled by Sifo for SvD between April 8 and 14 said they were against a boycott while 31 percent said they wanted Swedish political leaders to snub the ceremony.

Only 11 percent of Swedes would prefer a boycott of the entire Games, with 82 percent against such a move, according to the poll.

Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt said last week the Scandinavian country had no plans to boycott the opening ceremony or the Games.
