Staff and customers at Swedbank were being treated for shock after a group of robbers used explosives to open a safe and opened fire at the bank’s office in Västerhaninge.
The robbery at the nearby Handelsbanken took place before the bank had opened its doors to the public. Staff at the bank were ordered to lie on the floor.
There have been no reports of any injuries at either bank.
“They did not hesitate to shoot. They may have been using automatic weapons,” police spokeswoman Ann-Charlotte Wejnäs told TT.
Police said they found an abandoned getaway vehicle in Skogås, 8 kilometres from the scene of the crime.
“We don’t know if they continued on foot or continued their journey in a waiting car,” said Wejnäs.
Police said that a number of robbers had been involved in the two raids.
