Two killed in Baltic lifeboat accident

Two crew members on a Panama-registered cargo ship were killed and a third was injured when a lifeboat they were working on plunged into the sea off the coast of southern Sweden, Swedish rescue services said on Thursday.

“They were doing maintenance work on the lifeboat when something went wrong and it fell into the sea … Two died and one was injured,” Swedish rescue service spokesman Mathias Hansson told AFP.

The accident happened south of Karlskrona at around 2pm on Wednesday, Hansson said, adding that two Indian nationals and one Pakistani had been on the lifeboat when it fell.

It remained unclear which of the three crew members on the MSC India had been killed and which had been injured, he said.

“They were killed by the fall. The lifeboat fell between 15 and 18 metres (50-60 feet),” Hansson said.
