‘Dagens Nyheter is a horrible newspaper’ – Persson

In Monday's fourth and final installment of documentary 'Ordförande Persson' ('Chairman Persson'), the former prime minister reveals his dislike for Dagens Nyheter, Sweden's largest morning newspaper. The newspaper's chief political commentator, Henrik Brors, is singled out for particular criticism.

Trade newspaper Resumé reports on a sneak preview of the final episode of a series that has seen Göran Persson speak in an open and unflattering manner about many of his political peers. This time the media is on the receiving end.

“DN is a really horrible newspaper. Terribly party-political right throughout.”

The newspaper, according to Persson, is in a state of “intellectual collapse”.

“There’s this one columnist. What’s his name? Brors. He hasn’t written a single column that has been intellectually cohesive.

“Brors is completely untalented, and he never asks any questions at press conferences. He never dares, he has never dared take up anything.”

Henrik Brors has declined to comment until he has seen the programme.

Supplementary material made available in connection with ‘Ordförande Persson’ (‘Chairman Persson’) shows that the former leader knew that Laila Freivalds had lied about her involvement in the crisis surrounding the Muhammad illustrations, Dagens Nyheter reports.

For at least a week, he knew that she had been instrumental in ensuring the closure of the Sweden Democrats’ website.

After the Sweden Democrats had published one of the controversial illustrations on its website, the party was “informed” by the Swedish Security Services and foreign ministry staff that the material could damage Swedish interests.

When it was later revealed that Freivalds had sanctioned communications with the company that closed the Sweden Democrats’ website, the pressure became too much and she resigned on March 21st 2006.
