Sweden’s ‘priciest’ country manor for sale

Well-heeled buyers with 150 million kronor ($21.3 million) to spare can own an exclusive slice of real estate on the Baltic island of Gotland as Sweden's most expensive country estate was recently put up for sale.

Should a buyer be found ready to pay the 150 million kronor asking price for the unique mansion and expansive grounds, he or she would be able to lay claim to owning the most expensive piece of residential property in Sweden.

The 550 square metre house, named Skäggs Gård, is situated near Visby on the island of Gotland, and sits on a 1,400 hectare property that comes complete with carrot, potato and grain fields.

Real estate agent Dag Magnusson explained that the sheer size of the plot isn’t the mansion’s only selling point.

“There are several factors working in favour of the house,” he told The Local.

“It’s an enormous plot, not just by Gotland’s standards but also by Swedish standards, it’s potentially divisible into many smaller plots, and the soil is perfect for cultivating vegetables.”

And it’s not only multi-millionaires who have been calling, according to Magnusson.

“We’ve already had a significant interest in the place itself, but also from many farmers who are keen to own a 200 hectare plot of the land for farming purposes.”

The home is being sold through Booli, an online Swedish real estate search engine and CEO Anders Kyhlstedt explained that public curiosity grew after the online attention.

“There has been a huge interest in the house, especially after the listing got a second life and got spread virally online,” he told The Local.

When asked if he thought the house would sell soon, Kyhlstedt was positive.

“It’s hard to say. With a unique property such as this, you need a unique buyer, though I would be surprised to hear if bids haven’t already been made.”

The house previously belonged to Jacob von Corswant who took over the home 15 years ago and invested heavily in the growing of root vegetables.

The pricing of forestry and farms has risen by 30-40 percent over the past few years in Gotland, according to Magnusson, who added that many buyers see such land as a safe investment for the future.

The second priciest house in the country is Nygård outside of Västervik in southern Sweden, which comes with a 96 million kronor price tag.
