Man locked up for stealing Sweden’s royal jewels

A 22-year-old man has been jailed for his role in the theft of priceless 17th-century crown jewels from a Swedish cathedral last year – a heist so brazen it grabbed global headlines.

Eskilstuna District Court on Friday sentenced Nicklas Bäckström to four years and six months in jail.

The search for both the culprits and the jewels gained international attention after the crowns were taken from a cathedral in Strängnäs, one hour from Stockholm, with the suspects then seen fleeing the scene by bicycle and motorboat.

The crowns and orb were thought to be gone forever, when a security guard in Åkersberga, north of Stockholm, found them in a rubbish bin marked “bomb” earlier this month.

Bäckström's DNA was found on two of the items, and then confessed to having carried out the theft. He was already on trial after being identified by blood found at the crime scene, but during the initial police investigation had denied any involvement in the heist, admitting only to having supplied the getaway vehicles.

Another two men, aged 26 and 24, are currently in custody on suspicion of handling stolen goods in connection with the recovery of the royal jewels. According to police they are friends of the 22-year-old.

The crowns were made for the burial of King Charles IX and his wife Christina and date back to the early 1600s. They were stolen along with a royal orb. Some of the items were partly damaged in the theft, but experts believe it may be possible to restore them close to their original condition.

Man held after 38-year-old shot dead on Södermalm in Stockholm

A suspect is being held after a man in his 40s was shot dead in Stockholm's Södermalm district.

Man held after 38-year-old shot dead on Södermalm in Stockholm

The shooting happened at around 6.20pm on Monday evening and a huge police operation was immediately launched.

Police cordoned off the area around Helgalunden on Allhelgonagatan, which is close to the busy Götgatan street, Skanstull metro station and the Internationella Engelska Gymnasiet high school.

Sweden’s public broadcaster SVT reports that the victim is a 38-year-old man with links to gang crime, although police said it was too early to say whether the shooting was connected to a gang conflict.

Swedish tabloid Aftonbladet reports that the suspect is a man in his 20s, with a police record of a series of minor offences but no violent crime convictions.

The shooting happened in front of several witnesses.

“I live 50 metres from the scene and ran downstairs with a blanket and first aid kit. It was nice seeing so many people already there trying to save a life,” a witness told SVT.

“This happened in the middle of the day near the metro where there are a lot of people. This is otherwise a safe area. At the same time, it’s sad no matter where shootings happen.”
