The Vienna leg of the tour by American mega-star Taylor Swift has been cancelled after Austrian police arrested a man in connection with an Islamist attack plot, the organisers said Wednesday.

“With confirmation from government officials of a planned terrorist attack at Ernst Happel Stadium, we have no choice but to cancel the three scheduled shows for everyone’s safety,” Barracuda Music said on Instagram.

Austrian authorities said on Wednesday they have arrested a 19-year-old man for allegedly planning an Islamist attack in connection with concerts by US star Taylor Swift later this week.

He was detained in Lower Austria, about an hour from the capital earlier on Wednesday.

Chemical substances, allegedly to be used in explosives devices, were seized in his house and were being analysed, the police said.

The man, who had pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State (IS) group “in recent weeks”, was detained early on Wednesday, Austria’s top security chief Franz Ruf told a press conference.

“We have established corresponding preparatory acts and also that the focus of the 19-year-old perpetrator was on the Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna,” Ruf said.

A second person believed to have been in contact with the suspect was arrested in Vienna.

According to initial investigation findings, both suspects radicalised themselves on the internet.

About 65,000 spectators were expected at each show scheduled for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Organisers said all would-be concert-goers would have their tickets refunded.

How safe is it to visit Austria’s Frequency Festival?

After the Taylor Swift concerts were cancelled due to a terror threat, the Frequency Festival is the next major event in Austria. But how safe is it to go?

How safe is it to visit Austria's Frequency Festival?
Last week, three Taylor Swift concerts set to take place in Vienna were cancelled after authorities uncovered a potential terror threat.

On Wednesday, August 7th, the Viennese police announced the arrest of a 19-year-old man suspected of planning an Islamist attack targeting Taylor Swift’s concerts. Two other young man were also arrested in connection with the plot.

But despite the high terror alert level, the Frequency Festival is hosted as planned in St. Pölten from August 14th to 17th, although with extra security measures in place, reported Der Standard.

Increased security during the festival

This year, the festival will be held with extra security checks for the staff, and local authorities will check the credentials of registered employees at their respective company offices, according to the organiser Barracuda, who was also organising the Taylor Swift concerts.

This seems to be in response to the fact that one of the arrested suspects, a 17-year-old, had been employed with a company performing services for the US pop star concert in Vienna. The man was apprehended at the concert venue.

Police report that there are currently no signs of a specific threat to the festival. However, in response to the recent incident, also additional security guards will be on-site during the festival.

Visitors are advised to stay alert and report any suspicious activity immediately. The State Office for State Protection and Counter-Extremism will handle all issues.

There will also be seven medical stations at the festival, staffed by up to 120 paramedics and three emergency doctors. Crisis intervention and water rescue teams will also be on duty.

50,000 visitors expected

Frequency Festival is an annual music festival held in St. Pölten, half an hour by train from Vienna. It is known for its diverse line-up, which includes international and local artists across various genres, such as rock, pop, indie, electronic, and hip-hop.

This year’s line-up includes artists such as Ed Sheeran, Raf Camora, Apache 207, and The Offspring.

50,000 visitors are expected to attend the festival and enjoy the concerts each day. Due to this year’s more complex controls and security measures, visitors are expected to face longer waiting times.

The Red Cross advises wearing sturdy footwear at the campsite and using sun protection to cope with the sun and high temperatures. They also recommend staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, especially given that the festival is happening during one of the hottest summer heatwaves, with temperatures reaching up to 35°C.

In collaboration with the Frequency Festival, ÖBB is offering special trains between Vienna and St. Pölten during the festival days.
