Parents in Vienna will soon be able to register their children aged 12 to 15 for a Covid-19 vaccination, Health Councillor Peter Hacker has told Der Standard newspaper.
“We will shortly open our reservation platform so that parents can take note and register their twelve to fifteen-year-old children at once,” said Hacker.
If the Pfizer Biontech vaccine is approved for this age group by the European Medicine Agency (EMA), they could even start vaccinating this group before the summer.
Vienna is currently last in the league table of vaccinations in a comparison of Austria’s federal states, but says this is because it has vaccinated many residents of Burgenland and Lower Austria.
It is currently negotiating with the federal government over the 60,000 vaccination doses it says it is “missing”.
Will other states start vaccinating teenagers?
Authorities in other states are pushing to vaccinate teenagers, however as yet this is from the age 16 and up – the age group for which the vaccine is approved.
With next week’s return to face-to-face lessons in mind, Authorities in Tyrol are calling for everyone in school buildings to be vaccinated – including students aged 16 and up.
The Tyrolean Medical Association said adolescents should be vaccinated “with the highest priority”.
Doing so would represent “tremendous progress in curbing the spread of the virus and building a stable immunity against the coronavirus”, the TMA said.
