Andersson announced the squad at a 1pm press conference on Tuesday.

Ibrahimovic, who has 116 caps and 62 goals, has not worn the Swedish jersey since Euro 2016, where he was captain but failed to score as Sweden finished bottom of their group.

But last autumn, the striker said he “missed” wearing the yellow jersey. The Swedish Football Federation said the player then had a “good and fruitful” meeting with Andersson, who flew down to Italy to speak with the 39-year-old in person.

Ibrahimovic will now be part of Andersson’s squad in the World Cup qualifiers against Georgia (March 25th) and Kosovo (March 28th), and a friendly against Estonia (March 31st). Sweden’s squad for the European Championship will be announced on May 18th.

Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet reports he will then be the oldest footballer ever to play for Sweden – assuming that he does in fact play (he has not played for his club team AC Milan since late February due to injuries) – over a year older than the previous record-holders Henrik Larsson and Thomas Ravelli.

“The return of the God,” Ibrahimovic himself commented on Twitter on Tuesday.
