The wave of bad weather sweeping Italy continues on Wednesday, with alerts issued on Tuesday extended to other parts of the country.

Alpine areas can expect further snowfall and stormy conditions in many areas, Civil Protection officials stated.

“The phenomena will be accompanied by strong showers, possible hailstorms, frequent electrical activity and strong gusts of wind,” an official notice read.

“From late morning (on Wednesday) strong to gale-force winds are expected, from the south-west, across Campania, Calabria, Basilicata, Sicily and Puglia, with storm surges along the exposed coasts.”

A red alert was issued for the southern area of Campania and in the autonomous province of Bolzano, where the worst conditions are expected on Wednesday.

A lower-level orange warning is in place for the autonomous province of Trento, most of Friuli Venezia Giulia, Umbria, northern Campania, western Basilicata, and the Tyrrhenian side of Calabria.

A yellow alert was issued for Lazio, Abruzzo, Sicily, Emilia-Romagna, coastal Tuscany, most of Molise, western Sardinia and parts of Veneto.

Venice experienced high tides again this week, with flooding in the city centre on Tuesday.

The lagoon city's Mose flood-barrier system was lifted to protect the city on Wednesday after a miscalculation meant it was not raised in time to prevent flooding on Tuesday.
