The seismic movement occurred at a depth of 2km beneath the village of Relleu, an area inland from Alicante between the coast and Alcoi according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and could be felt in the hills to the resorts along the coast from Benidorm to Gandia.
The quake hit at 5.25am with the shaking lasting approximately five seconds. It was followed by a less intense aftershock but there are no reports of any damage to buildings.
