Sweden's medical university Karolinska Institutet fell to 45th place in the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU – also often referred to as the Shanghai Ranking), down from 38th place last year.

It was followed by Stockholm University, which improved its standing compared to last year, climbing from 73rd place to number 69 in the rankings.

In doing so, it overtook Uppsala University, which fell from 62nd to 77th place.

Sweden's Danish neighbours got the highest spot out of the Nordic countries, with University of Copenhagen in 33rd place. But Sweden had the most universities listed in the top 100, compared to two in Denmark, one each in Norway and Finland, and none in Iceland.

The other Swedish universities that made the top 1000 were:

  • University of Gothenburg (101-150)
  • Lund University (151-200)
  • KTH Royal Institute of Technology (201-300)
  • Chalmers University of Technology (301-400)
  • Linköping University (301-400)
  • Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (301-400)
  • Stockholm School of Economics (401-500)
  • Umeå University (401-500)
  • Örebro University (601-700)
  • Linneaus University (801-900)
  • Luleå University of Technology (801-900)

Linneaus University was the newcomer on the list, not having made the ranking last year.

Among the six indicators used to rank the universities were the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly cited researchers, and the number of articles cited in journals of nature and science. Harvard University in the US again established its place as number one in the rankings.
