Spain revises coronavirus death toll up as it prepares to welcome back tourists

The last official numbers on victims were released on June 7th when Madrid confirmed 27,136 victims.

John Hopkins University, which compiles figures from across the globe puts Spain’s death toll slightly higher at 28,315 while recording a quarter of a million confirmed cases.

Despite the rise in numbers, Spain says the epidemic is now under control and has been restricted to a few localized outbreaks.

The health minister, Salvador Illa, said that these outbreak areas had been reduced from some 32 to nine over recent weeks.

On Sunday the government will lift the state of emergency and open its doors back up to visitors from across the EU. People will also be able to move freely again inside the country for the first time since March.

Holidaymakers arriving in the country will have their temperatures taken at the airport or road crossing and will need to provide authorities with information on their whereabouts in Spain.
