The Swedish-founded furniture giant on Friday announced a 1.7 billion kronor (approximately $174 million) revamp of its stores at Barkarby, north of Stockholm, and Kungens Kurva, south of Stockholm and one of the world's oldest Ikea stores.
It also said it would open four new, and smaller, stores in the Stockholm region in the next five years, but would not reveal potential opening dates or their exact planned locations.
“Stockholm is Sweden's capital, we're seeing that the region is growing a lot and there is a great potential in this market,” Ikea's regional head Cia Fritzon Gårdnäs told reporters.
“By opening these new stores we will recruit more than 500 new co-workers,” she added.
The largest of the stores will be 15,000 square metres, half the size of a standard Ikea store as you know it, which is usually around 35,000 square metres.
Ikea said it had found that time pressure was an important factor for Stockholmers, and that the new stores would be more accessible and closer to where their customers live.
