Flood warnings after one month’s rain falls in less than 24 hours

Sweden's national weather agency SMHI issued class-one alerts (the least serious kind on a scale from one to three) for strong winds in the southern and central-western regions Värmland, Örebro, Västra Götaland, Halland, Blekinge, and most of Småland and Skåne apart from the east coast.

A class-two alert was in place for areas around streams and rivers in Halland and parts of Västra Götaland, with SMHI warning of high flows “at a level that occurs on average every 10 to 50 years”.

The warning comes after around 30-40 millimetres of rain came down in several parts in the regions, and even up to 50 millimetres in some places – as much rain as the regions normally get over the whole of February.

And a minor storm is also moving in on Monday, just after Storm Dennis wreaked havoc in northern Europe on Sunday. A four-year-old girl was injured after a tree toppled over in the strong winds in Denmark.

“It's a similar situation as yesterday,” SMHI meteorologist Jon Jörpeland told Swedish news agency TT on Monday morning. “We're expecting south-western wind at wind speeds of more than 21 m/s.”
