Fiestas

Carthaginians and Romans Festival, Cartagena, Murcia (September 15th – 24th)

Originally from Lebanon, the Cathaginians fled to the Mediterranean after they were invaded and became seafaring traders.  It was too bad that the Romans also fancied a bit of maritime trade – as well as conquering more and more land – and this fiesta in Cartagena involves re-enactments of the warfare, eventually to be won by the Romans.

This festival dates back to the Middle Ages and more than 1400 people participate in the main event – a parade of giants, featuring King James I of Aragon, his wife and many figures from the bible.  as with any Valencia festival, paella is a main component and be sure to try some of the local seafood varieties.

Fiesta De La Mercé, Barcelona (September 22nd – 25th)

Free music concerts are held for this festival which is held in honour of the city’s patron saint, Our Lady of Mercy.  Expect the usual Catalan partying – sardana-dancing, fireworks and human towers galore. 

Culture

San Sebastián International Film Festival, Basque Country (September 22nd – 30th)

In late September San Sebastian proudly host their world famous film festival when it showcases Spanish films, including five from first-time directors, as a launch pad for international selection. It will also see the premiere of “Michelin Stars – Tales From The Kitchen”, a documentary about the much coveted star rating culture.
 
It will close with “The Wife” starring six-time Oscar nominee Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce, who will both be in attendance.
 
 
Wine

We all know and love the wine from Spain's most famous grape-growing region but now is the chance to appreciate it using all your senses.

For a fortnight, wineries across La Rioja throw open their doors to a series of concerts, tasting events, talks and tours all designed to add to the enjoyment of a glass of wine.

Theatre

International Mime Festival, Sueca in Valencia. (September 14th – 18th)

The only festival in Spain dedicated exclusively to gestural theatre, it is considered one of the three most important in Europe.  With events for wannabe clowns to performances in mime, pantomime, clowning and circus techniques, there is lots of fun for all the family.

Sport

La Vuelta, cycling race across Spain (Ends in Madrid September 10th)

Participants in Spain's most important cycling race cover more than 3,200 kms in 21 stages across the plains, mountains and lowlands of Spain. Spectators turn out in crowds to cheer the cyclists on as they pass through towns along the route ending in Madrid with a big celebration.

Spain’s autumn forecast: warmer and drier than usual

Autumn in Spain this year looks set to be drier and warmer than is typical for the season, according to predictions from the National Meteorological Agency Aemet.

The season officially arrived on Tuesday September 22nd at 3:31pm with the autumn equinox and will last until the winter solstice on December 21st.

So as the first rain of the season arrives  in parts of the peninsula this week, Aemet looks ahead at what’s in store for the next 89 days and 20 hours of autumn.

Based on modelling and probability data, Aemet suggests that temperatures will once again be slighter higher than average for the last quarter of the year across the whole of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands experiencing an average temperature rise of 0.6C.

After a summer that was recorded as the ninth hottest on record, it seems we are heading for an autumn with less rainfall than is typical this time of year, apart from the Canary Islands where an increase in rainfall is expected.

In some parts of Spain summer will be brought to an abrupt close this week with the arrival of storms, high winds and torrential rain especially along the northern coast and northeast of the country.

Other parts of Spain however, notably the southern half of the peninsula will be enjoyingwhat the Spanish call a “veranillo de San Miguel” – when the warmer weather continues beyond the feast day of Saint Michael on September 29th.

This year some predict that we won’t be needing to pull out the long trousers and jumpers (that’s long pants and sweaters for American readers) until at least the first week of October.
