The mercury soared across Spain over the weekend and is set to get even hotter as the week progresses.

Six provinces across Andalusia, Castilla La Mancha and Extremadura are on amber alert (significant risk) with temperatures expected to reach above 40C, according to predictions by state meteorogical agency AEMET:

While a further 18 provinces are on a lower level yellow alert with temperatures predicted for the mid-thirties as winds bring hot air from the Sahara across the Iberian peninsula.

With temperatures already reaching heights more usual for July and August, it’s just as well that municipal open air swimming pools are now open for the season.
