Bayern file UEFA complaint over Madrid police ‘attack’

Bayern Munich accused Spanish police of "violent attacks" on their supporters during the Champions League defeat at Real Madrid and filed a complaint with UEFA on Wednesday.

The German club said police action on Tuesday during half time at the Santiago Bernabeu was “completely misplaced and excessive” and have requested an explanation from Spanish authorities.

Eye-witnesses said that riot police stormed the visitors' section of the ground to remove a banner, which led to Bayern fans attacking officers, who replied in kind.

About 4,500 Bayern fans travelled to watch the Germans bow out 6-3 on aggregate, after going down on the night 4-2 in extra time in the quarter-final second leg.

Security was boosted in the Spanish capital ahead of the quarter-final second leg, which was declared “high risk” as is common for high profile Champions League games, after several European ties have been marred by violence.

There were clashes last week in the heart of Madrid between Leicester City supporters and police before the English side's Champions League quarter-final at Atletico Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a controversial hat-trick to become the first man to reach 100 Champions League goals as Real Madrid overcame 10-man Bayern Munich 4-2 after extra time in Tuesday's thrilling quarter-final second leg.

The holders surged through 6-3 on aggregate at an exhilarated Santiago Bernabeu to take their place in Friday's semi-final draw for a record seventh consecutive year.

Spain's La Liga on Monday said it was reviewing a video of a child making racist insults towards Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior during the 2-2 draw with Valencia at the weekend.

“We’re in the process of studying and analysing the facts from a legal standpoint to see what we can and should do,” La Liga sources said.

In a video published by a journalist for ESPN Brasil, and picked up by Spanish media, a boy sitting in a woman’s lap can be heard calling Vinicius a “monkey”.

The Brazilian scored twice for Madrid as his team recovered from two goals down at Mestalla on Saturday.

Vinicius raised his fist in a “Black Power” salute after the first of his two goals at a ground where he was racially abused last season. Valencia subsequently banned three people from the stadium for life.

The 23-year-old has become a symbol of the fight against discrimination in Spanish football after suffering racist abuse on many occasions, and he was jeered repeatedly by home supporters on Saturday.

Jude Bellingham was sent off after the final whistle against Valencia for protesting after the referee blew the final whistle right before the England midfielder headed home what he thought was the winning goal.
