Only public daycare centres within 1.5km of the nearest Metro stop are included in the map, which was released with the aim of helping parents choose where to apply for the 2017/2018 academic year.
It was created by Giulia sotto la metro, a website which shares photos and stories about Rome's transport network. Centres with one asterix are state-subsidized, and those with two are 'sezioni ponte', meaning they have a higher focus on education and are aimed at children close to school age.
Finding state-provided childcare is often a problem for parents in Italy, a country which has traditionally relied on close family and community links to look after children.
The state-run preschools are often very over-subscribed, particularly in cities. While private childcare is a preferred option for some, half of Italian women who don't send their children to daycare said the reason was that they couldn't afford the cost, while almost 12 percent said they couldn't find a place for their child, according to data from statistics agency Istat.
The map is part of a series, including a previous version which showed the nearest police stations to every Metro station, as part of a campaign about domestic violence.
That campaign was released on Valentine's Day, with the slogan: “If love is hurting you, you know where to get out.”
“On some days more than others, we forget what can happen within the walls of other houses,” police said at the time.
