National weather agency SMHI issued a class-2 warning for the Kalmar region – the second highest warning level – predicting up to 20 centimetres of snow.

“We're expecting ten to 15 centimetres of snowfall that may continue until Monday morning. It might even get up to 20 centimetres in some places,” said Charlotta Eriksson from SMHI.

The combination of snowfall and strong winds was enough for the agency to issue the class-2 warning, which is reserves for “very severe weather”.

“The developing weather could be dangerous, causing considerable structural damage and significant disruption of public services,” the agency's site reads.

The rest of southern Sweden, which is also expected to be hit by severe snowfall, was issued a class-1 warning (see map below).

Friday night and Saturday morning saw dangerous conditions across western parts of Sweden, with several accidents occurring due to the slippery roads

Traffic authorities urged motorists to stay vigilant.
