A pensioner who found pocketed €900 in cash that she found on the floor of a cashpoint booth in Santander was arrested and charged with theft after failing to report the windfall.

The 69-year-old woman, identified only by her initials A.S.M.A, must have thought her luck was in when she came across a plastic envelope containing the cash on the floor infront of the ATM in the doorway of a branch in the Marqués de la Hermida district of the Cantabrian capital on January 25th.

It has been dropped just moments before by a man who had withdrawn the large amount of cash before entering the branch to carry out another transaction, according to local newspaper El Diario de Montanes.

While standing at the counter he discovered his loss and rushed back outside to retrieve it, but it was too late – the money was already gone.

But the incident had been recorded on CCTV and the woman was clearly seen scooping the packet off the floor before leaving the booth.

Police arrested her on Friday, more than a fortnight after the incident, when she told police that she had “fully intended to hand it in”.

The woman has been charged with theft and released pending trial.
