The twins, a boy and girl, were safely delivered by caesarean section on Tuesday at the Hospital Recoletas de Burgos, hospital authorities confirmed.

Hospital authorities released a video clip announcing the news.

“The twins, a boy and a girl, are in good health as is their mother after a planned caesarean section,” read a statement issused by the private hospital. “The mother underwent fertility treatment in the United States and was cared throughout her pregnancy by staff in Burgos”.

A report in the local newspaper Diario de Burgos claimed that the woman had her first child, a girl, six years ago – also after fertility treatment – but that the daughter had been in the care of social services since 2014.

The woman, whose identity has not been revealed beyond her initials M.I.A,  is one of the oldest in the world to give birth, but is still two years younger than the current holder of the record, fellow Spaniard Maria del Carmen Bousada Lara, who also gave birth to twins.

Bousada, who was born on January 5th 1940 gave birth by caesarean section to twin boys, Christian and Pau, a week before her 67th birthday at the Sant Pau hospital, Barcelona, Spain on 29 December 2006.

Unfortunately, her sons were orphaned when two-years-old after their mother died of cancer.

Last May, a woman claiming to be 72 gave birth in India. But because Daljinder Kaur hadno birth certificate and could not prove her age, she is not recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.
