Lufthansa starts flying people on Trump travel ban into Boston

In an announcement on its website, Lufthansa said that the decision was in response to a decision by the District Court in Massachusetts to suspend the travel ban until that date.

The airline says that all passengers with valid travel documents may now board their flights to Boston.

US President Donald Trump issued the ban last Friday on nationals of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen entering the US, regardless of whether they held a valid visa.

A later clarification of the ban allowed for citizens of the seven countries who also hold the passport of another country to enter the US.

Trump's executive orders on immigration have sparked a global outcry and criticism from both Democrats and Republicans in the US. The move sparked immediate anger, confusion and protests in airports across the United States.

A spokesperson for Lufthansa told The Local that they weren’t giving out any figures on that exact amount of passengers who had been able to travel through this decision, but said the number was “very small”.

The company made clear that the decision was not political, but that they had contractual obligations to fulfill with their passengers. Any further changes in the legal situation in the US would have an immediate impact on their policy, the spokesperson added.
