The snow started falling shortly after 6am in Turin with up to 7cm in the city and around 80cm in mountainous Cuneo.
There was no reported disruption to traffic. Blocks on certain vehicles are currently in place to help combat the high levels of smog.
Temperatures remained between -4 and 1C throughout Monday, with another light dusting of snow expected this evening.
Clouds and rain were dominant in many other major cities, including Rome, Milan and Naples.
In Sardinia, a red weather warning has been put in place due to heavy rainstorms and strong winds.

After a generally mild start to the winter, Italy can expect a drop in temperatures and more snowfall over the next few days.
In the centre of the country, heavy rain is also predicted for Lazio, Tuscany, Abruzzo and Molise.
So what about Christmas?
It's not certain, but experts predict it won't be a white one in the major cities.
One place that could see snowfall is the Po Valley, but for the majority of the country, the meteorologists at Meteo.it have forecast light rain, subsiding on Boxing Day (Santo Stefano in Italy) to make way for some sunshine in the north but continued rainfall in the centre and south.
As for New Year, they predict “stable weather with an absence of snow and cold”.
