White Christmas to remain a dream in Switzerland

The chances of it snowing at Christmas this year are very remote, say weather forecasters.

News agencies quoted Meteonews as saying that thanks to a stable high pressure zone over Switzerland, the likelihood of snow in lower regions is only around five percent.

At the moment all peaks below 2,000 metres are still green and they are set to remain that way.

The high pressure that has been settled over the country for the past two weeks is preventing rain clouds from building up in the Alpine region, meteorologists say.

Last month's early winter snowfalls have melted away and some regions have had no rain or snow this month.

Ski regions are being forced to rely on snow cannon.

Although the month is turning out much drier than normal, at altitudes of below 800 metres fog is preventing temperatures from rising much above freezing point.

At higher altitudes there is more sunshine and temperatures are milder than normal.

Although the forecast is bad news for skiers, frozen lakes are providing perfect conditions for skating in places including the Obersee in Graubünden and the Lac des Taillères in Neuchâtel.
