One killed as light aircraft crash lands at eastern France airport

One person was killed when a light aircraft crashlanded at an airport in eastern France on Wednesday, airport managers said.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear but it forced the closure of the main runway at the EuroAirport Bale-Mulhouse near the Swiss border.

The plane was a Piper PA-34 which “crashed as it was preparing to land near the main North-South runway and caught fire”, airport management said in a statement.

It was not immediately known if there were any other people aboard the aircraft.

According to local press reports, the airport was blanketed by fog at the time of the accident in the late afternoon.

A microlight plane crashed into the roof of a house in western Germany on Saturday, leaving three people dead, including the mother of a young child, firefighters said.

The accident, the cause of which has not been determined, took place in Wesel, a city on North Rhine-Westphalia, according to local police.

The small plane crashed into an apartment built under the roof of the house, where a woman and her two-year-old child lived, causing a fire which gutted the place.

The mother was among the victims, along with two people aboard the plane, firefighters said.

The child was only slightly injured.
