The department of Upper Corsica was hit on Thursday and through the night into Friday by thunderstorms so severe that the national weather agency Météo France issued a red alert warning.

Thousands of homes lost electricity on Thursday evening and school was cancelled for students in Upper Corsica on Friday, reported the local Corse-Matin newspaper.

It added that all flights in and out of the area had been cancelled from the area and many secondary roads were closed off.

Pictures from the scene showed flooded roads and rivers, and uprooted trees that had been swept away.

The south eastern regions of France have been hit by storms all week, and they're expected to carry on into at least the very early hours of Friday morning.

Five departments were issued orange alerts on Friday morning for flooding: Gard, Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-Maritimes, and Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.

Thursday night saw a mini tornado cause havoc in Hérault, leaving cars upturned and structural damage to local buildings.
