French cops bust gang of luxury car thieves

A two-country police operation has smashed an organised crime gang that stole high-end luxury cars in France and re-sold them for bargain-basement prices in Germany, Europe's judicial agency said Friday.

French and German police raided 24 homes in the two countries on Thursday, leading to the arrest of 15 suspected gang members and the recovery of 11 luxury cars, said Eurojust, which helped to coordinate the operation.

The investigation into the theft of posh cars started in June, when police dismantled a Roma camp in northern France, the Hague-based agency said in a statement.

That probe revealed links to two other cases lodged at the district court in Le Havre and it was discovered “the cars were stolen in France and sold to customers in Germany for low prices.”

Seventeen cases were also under scrutiny by organised crime investigators in Lille, Eurojust said.

The car gang “broke into car owners' private homes to steal their car keys,” before making off with the vehicles, forging identity papers and driving them to Germany, the agency said.

Nurse defrauds French state of €1.5 mn

A French court on Wednesday condemned a nurse to two years under house arrest for stealing more than €1.5 million from the national health insurance through claims for bogus appointments.

Nurse defrauds French state of €1.5 mn

The court in the southern town of Marseille found the 67-year-old guilty of a “large-scale scam” that notably exploited the details of vulnerable migrants.

From 2017 to 2020, she billed the national health insurance for 81,449 imaginary services, using the data of people eligible for fully refundable healthcare, including acquaintances and migrants on a charity list.

This allowed her to claim up to €1,524,538 from more than 30 regional national health insurance funds.

The court seized eight real estate properties she had acquired with the proceeds, as well as some money on her and husband’s bank accounts.

It sentenced her to two years under house arrest plus another possible three, depending on her behaviour, paying a €30,000 fine and reimbursing the damages.

It also forbade her from ever again performing her profession.
