Two men and one woman were run over and killed by a freight train at about 10.45pm near Karl-Wiechert-Allee station, according to broadcaster NDR.

The circumstances behind the accident remained unclear as of Tuesday morning and investigations are continuing.

The three were aged between 18 and 21 years old.

The train lines were blocked off for several hours and, during that time, 24 trains were either cancelled or delayed.
