The emergency services dispatched a fire truck to deal with an accident outside Hjo in central Sweden after a car collided with a cow on the road just before 11pm on Sunday, reports broadcaster SVT.

But on its way there the emergency vehicle was involved in an accident of its own, when it crashed into a herd of 37 cows that had gathered on the road after escaping from a nearby field.

Most of the cows died on impact and others were so badly hurt they had to be put down at the scene.

“It was dark and rainy and the cows were dark. It's unbelievable that what happened happened,” emergency control room officer Göran Sandström told SVT.

A fire fighter was injured in the leg in the crash and had to be taken to hospital.

“The whole thing is a pretty miserable incident,” said police control room officer Eva Ekblad.

The fire truck was so badly damaged in the collision that it never made it to the original accident. Fortunately that driver escaped without injuries, but that cow also died in the crash.
