Saloufest calls time on drunken student parties

But organisers have announced that the event will no longer be staged on the Costa Dorada after bowing to pressure from authorities keen to clean up the image of their resort.

For several years the Easter holiday Saloufest has made headlines across Spain for all the wrong reasons with images of semi-naked drunken brits vomiting and passing out in the streets.

The town council complained that despite the financial returns to local businesses the student parties, billed by organizers as a “sex and alcohol summet” were damaging the image of the resort.

Now organisers have decided to cancel future events in Salou claiming that local and regional authorities have made future events “ virtually impossible” and have “closed its doors to your tourists”.

“Having operated for 16 years without interruption, having brought more than 100,000 customers, and provided the order of €5 milliom annually to the economy of Salou and the region during the low season, the various pressures, applied both by the Council of Salou and the Generalitat de Catalunya for the past two years have made it virtually impossible implement programs for the youth segment of tourism in the region,” read a statement fro ILoveTour, the organisers of the event.

“Apart fromthe media pressure received in recent years, collaborating companies have received a disturbing number of administrative inspections, simply because of their collaboration with the event.

“And the pressures that some of our customers have suffered, university students from over 100 universities in the UK (among which are the some of the best universities in Europe), when treated on several occasions in an intimidating manner by police, fined when being harmless and within the law.”

The town council said it will instead concentrate on attracting “more family friendly tourism”.
