A 19-year-old man in Hanover called police on Thursday after he came upon the shocking discovery in his apartment. The suitcase contained a newborn baby girl, still alive, along with the skeleton of another infant, police and state prosecutors reported on Friday.

The baby girl has since been brought to a hospital in the capital of Lower Saxony and her condition is said to be stable.

Police arrested the 19-year-old's 22-year-old girlfriend and presumed mother of both babies at her workplace and she is set to face a judge on Friday. The 19-year-old man has not been detained by police in the case.

The 22-year-old woman is accused of manslaughter and attempted manslaughter. Police believe the dead infant died some time ago.

Police are now questioning the young man as well as neighbours and colleagues of the woman.
