While it may have been too rainy for some to venture outside on Sunday, much of Paris was car-free for a good seven hours.

In fact, around 650km worth of roads in the city were off limits to all cars beside taxis, buses, and emergency service vehicles (see map below).

The move marked the second of its kind (the first was in September last year) and was intended to encourage Parisians to consider walking or taking public transport instead of their car.

Here's what it looked like.

Air pollution has proved to be a huge problem for France, and kills around 48,000 people per year

It's particularly bad in Paris, which was briefly briefly measured to have been the most polluted city on earth in March last year.
