The accident happened at around 2pm on Wednesday in the commune of I’Isle, not far from the Lac de Joux, Vaud police said in a statement.

Rescue workers attended the scene of the crash but the two men – whose identity has not been released – were already dead when they were recovered from the cockpit.

Police have released no information regarding the cause of the crash, which is being investigated along with the Swiss transportation safety Investigation board (SUST).

Glider accidents are not uncommon in Switzerland.

In May this year a 60-year-old pilot lost his life in the Swiss Jura when his glider crashed in the commune of Montricher.

And last year a 25-year-old died during a glider competition in the canton of Gräubunden.
