Italian mafia fugitive found on family holiday in Benidorm

Police posed as hotel staff to capture the fugitive Salvatore Mariano, who had been on the run since March, and was one of the most-wanted members of the Italian mafia.

A member of the Camorra, the notorious mafia from Naples,  the 40-year-old was tracked down to Benidorm where he was staying in one of the more upmarket hotels on the seafront in the busy resort.

The Italian, who was featured in Italy’s top 100 most dangerous fugitives and is accused of organized crime and drug trafficking, was on holiday with his wife and kids when police tracked him down.

He had been on the run since a police raid in March 2nd led to the arrest of 33 members of the Contini clan and seized €20 million worth of illicit goods.

Mariano was finally located on Sunday when a police team posed as room service staff at the hotel and gained access to his suite.

The operation was part of a collaboration between the Carabinieri and Spain’s Guardia Civil.

He will now be extradited to Italy to stand trial.
