A family in Gothenburg had a chilling surprise when they arrived home early in the morning only to find that their house had been broken into by a gang of sweet-toothed burglars.

Police were alerted to the ongoing incident in the Kviberg area of Gothenburg at 1.42am.

“Someone caught thieves in the act. They were skulking around in the property with a flashlight,” police spokesperson Ulla Brehm told regional tabloid GT on Thursday.

Police failed to catch the burglars, who quickly made their getaway when the family entered the home, but left behind unmistakable traces of the break-in in the kitchen.

“They had been in the fridge and freezer and got packs of ice cream out and other things they had intended to eat,” said Brehm.

“But they did not have time to eat any ice cream.”

It was not known whether anything was stolen from the property.

This is not the first incident of its kind in Sweden. Last month thieves raided a store in southern Sweden of (literally) an aircraft load of candy.

And last year a business owner warned that an organized gang of candy thieves could be operating in the area after chocolate bars worth thousands of kronor were taken from his store.
