Sports journalist Marc-André Berset and his cameraman, who are unhurt, were travelling in a car towards the Olympic stadium in the Brazilian city on Sunday night when their driver decided to take a short cut to avoid traffic jams, reported news agencies.

His GPS took them near to a dangerous part of the city, where an armed man confronted the vehicle.

The driver refused to stop and managed to drive away, as their aggressor fired shots at the car.

A press spokesman for RTS confirmed the incident to news agencies.

Berset was left “shaken” by the event, said a colleague at new agency ATS.

It’s the latest in a number of violent and criminal incidents during the Rio Games.

Last week Blick journalist Fabio Back said a backpack containing his laptop and camera equipment were stolen by thieves when the driver of the Uber car he was in had to stop to change a tire.

During the wheel change the journalist was distracted by a man who asked him for directions. A surveillance camera at the scene showed the bag being stolen.
