Weather experts at UBIMET say western Austria may feel winter-like conditions with some mountain areas seeing as much as 60 liters per square metre of rainfall.
Temperatures will also drop from Vorarlberg to Salzkammergut from Friday evening, ranging from 14 to 22 degrees Celsius. “Hikers and holidaymakers in the high mountain regions should be prepared for deep winter-like conditions,” said meteorologist Josef Lukas.
South-eastern Austria will initially feel warmer – around 30 degrees – but the temperature will gradually drop following rain showers and storms.
“From Carinthia over southern Styria and into south Burgenland, there will be strong storms,” said Lukas.
In the areas north of the Danube, including eastern Flachland, will see the least amount of rain although a stormy westerly wind will keep it feeling fresh, according to UBIMET.
The cool temperatures will not hang around for too long, however, with the weather calming on Saturday. By Sunday it will be warm enough to swim again with some places seeing temperatures as high as 29 degrees.
