Earlier this year budget airline Norwegian made headlines when it announced flights from Paris CDG to New York for €179 one way.

But now Icelandic airways Wow Air, perhaps aiming to capitalise on the all the love shown to the nation’s football team in recent weeks, is to offer tickets for €129 one-way.

Travellers will have to wait a while however as the low cost tickets are only for flights from November onwards but reservations are open.

Granted the tickets do come with some extra costs and inconveniences.

For a start passengers will have to be prepared for a 90 minute stop-over in Reykjavik, plus a €55 charge to check-in luggage and a charge of between €6 and €40 for choosing a seat.

The planes used to fly passengers to the Big Apple will be the airline’s new Airbus 321 aircraft.

However given that Norwegian airlines state that on their flights from Paris to New York passengers can only take hand luggage weighing less than 10kg and must pay extra for meals during the eight hour flight, Wow air’s deal remains the lowest out there on the market.

Wow Air had already successfully opened up new routes from Paris to Montreal and Toronto and last month to San Francisco and Los Angeles.

New York has always been a popular destination for French travellers.

In a recent survey entitled “Where will the French go to this summer”, the US city was placed second in the rankings behind Bangkok and ahead of Bali, Montreal and Athens.
