More flight delays hit Swedish airport

Travellers at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport were beset again with delays on Saturday afternoon after technical problems with flightplan management software.

“The flightplan management system is not working as it should,” Per Fröberg of Swedish air traffic control told Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet.

The flightplan contains the information about the aircraft's route, estimated departure and arrival, and is essential for the management of air traffic. The plans are usually managed digitally, but because of the problems with the system, they must now be completed manually.

“We believe that the fault is here in Sweden, but we are not sure. So far I do not know if airports other than Arlanda have been hit,” said Fröberg.

For some flights, the problems have led to up to two hours of delays.

The technical problems come just nine days after a computer problem led to the closure of Stockholm airspace.

Sweden's air traffic control authority blamed those delays on maintenance work carried out by communications company Telia.
