The six Spanish protesters from the international Greenpeace environmental campaign group climbed up 80 metres of the iconic KIO Towers in Madrid on Tuesday, unfurling a gigantic 300 square-metre banner reading “No to TTIP”.
The proposed EU-US trade deal TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) has been garnering heated criticism from activist groups across Europe due to concerns that it will lead to lifting certain environmental regulations and hurt the European economy.
Greenpeace released leaked documents from the negotiations earlier this month, which the group said showed how the deal would be a “threat” to Europeans, including how the US wants to scrap existing EU rules related to things like food labelling or the approval of dangerous chemicals if such rules prove burdensome to free trade.
