In a story that could have come straight out of a superhero film, the 22-year-old Dominik Bogen reacted immediately on Tuesday morning when he noticed a family house burning near his barracks in the valley of Walgau, Vorarlberg.

After forcing the locked door down with his body, Bogen then found elderly Paula Amann trapped in the entrance and led her out of the smoke-filled house to safety.

After making breakfast at 6.30am, the OAP had sat down to read the newspapers but forgot that she left the pan on the stove.

She described to the ORF that she was shocked when she saw there was a big cloud of smoke in the kitchen and flames coming up out of the stove.

She even tried to put the fire out herself with a hand towel but was unsuccessful and had attempted to leave the house.

The smoke was so strong it was noticed in the nearby barracks and hero soldier Bogen was able break in and bring her to safety, possibly rescuing her life according to the local fire service.

The fire service were quickly on the scene and able to put out the fire, although the kitchen was severely damaged.
