For an annual fee of €49, those between the ages of 12 and 25 can get huge discounts on the price of domestic flights that are operated by Air France's low-cost subsidiary Hop!

A full 130 lines across France will see discounts of up to 30 percent in peak times.

This means a youngster could fly from Paris to Marseille for as little as €44, for example.

The airlines are rolling out the cards in an effort to make air travel more attractive for the younger generations, who are all too happy to spend a day carpooling or in a train.

A study has shown that within France and for journeys of over 300 kilometres, 65 percent of journeys are carried out on the road, 25 percent via rail and only seven percent by air.

And Air France is hoping the youth discount card takes off.

“We are currently transporting 800,000 young people each year. With this card, we're hoping to reach 100,000 more,” Hop! spokesperson Lionel Guérin told Le Parisien newspaper

The CEO of Air France added that the plan was to extend the service all the way up to the age of 28 in the future.

Young people will also be able to reschedule a ticket at a cost of only €10, or cancel one for just €20.
