‘Balcony of Paris’ reopens to offer new view of skyline

The dome of the Pantheon – or as Le Figaro called it, The Balcony of Paris – was reopened on Friday morning after a long restoration. 

 

The restoration job was carried out to fix some of the aging stones and corroded metals, unsurprising wear and tear considering the building was completed back in 1790.

 

The dome's viewing platform, which is 35 metres above the ground, offers a stunning view of the city from its position in the Latin Quarter, on the south side of the Seine river. 

 

Tourists and Parisians alike have been welcomed to take part in the six daily tours to the dome, which involves a trip up 200 stairs and then unspoiled 360 degree views along the viewing platform. 

 

The dome is open until October. 

 

Around 700,000 people visit the mausoleum downstairs each year, which is the final resting place of distinguished French citizens.
