The 23-hour strike has been called by Spain’s workers’ union the CCOO for Wednesday March 23rd to protest the failure by Renfe, the train operator, and Adif, the company in charge of the track network, to fulfil an agreement to hire more workers.

The strike will begin at midnight on Tuesday night and continue until 11pm on Wednesday, the day that many travellers across Spain head off on their Easter break.

“The situation involves not just the loss of collective bargaining rights but also a commitment to provide jobs with the creation of 930 new positions within Renfe and Adif,” a statement from CCOO released on Monday said.

Train workers staged several strikes last year but called off a strike scheduled to take place the Friday before Christmas after an agreement was reached.

“Those agreements have now been blocked,” said a statement from CCOO. “The strike will only be called off if the Ministry of Transport lifts the restrictions and forces the transport companies to comply.”

Renfe have yet to detail what services will be provided during the strike but will offer full refunds or a replacement ticket on the next available train to travellers facing cancellations.
