The driver had been on the A2 road in Wiener Neudorf driving into Vienna when he crashed for an unknown reason into a barrier that divided the two sides of the road.

As a picture taken after the crash on Monday shows, a pole – which is used to mark the boundary between the road and snow – then came through the windscreen and into the car.

According to the voluntary fire services, the pole stopped just centimetres in-front of the driver's face.

The lucky driver managed to escape with no injuries, although the car was badly damaged.
