The picture shows Prince Oscar sleeping soundly on some crisp white linen and wrapped in a cosy cream blanket.

It was posted on the Royal Court's website on Monday afternoon, along with a caption explaining that it had been taken at Haga Palace in Stockholm, the official city residence of Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Daniel and Princess Estelle, as well as the newest addition to their family.

Swedes immediately rushed to social media to share the photo, with stories featuring the picture swiftly among the most clicked on in the country, according to social media news site Socialanyheter.

Prince Oscar, who is also Duke of Skåne, Sweden's southernmost region, was born last Wednesday at Karolinska University Hospital, weighing 3,655 grams and measuring 52 centimetres.

The very first official picture of the new royal showed him in a carry cot as his family headed home from the hospital, but the baby's face was not clear in the somewhat grainy snap.

The prince is King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia's fourth grandchild, joining London-based Princess Madeleine's two children Leonore and Nicolas as well as his sister Estelle.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia are also expecting their first child later this month or in April.
