Lugano’s airport forced to close for nine days

The Lugano-Agno airport is set to shut down from October 10th to 19th, a spokesman told the ATS news agency.

Work on the runway has been planned for a long time, the spokesman said.

The regional airport plans to provide more information on the temporary closure on its website in the near future.

Located four kilometres west of Lugano, in southern Switzerland, close to the Italian border, the airport is used by around 200,000 passengers each year.

Employing 73 people, the airport is majority owned by the city of Lugano while the canton of Ticino has a 12.5 percent ownership.

Airlines including Swiss and Etihad Regional offer scheduled flights from the airport to Geneva and Zurich with seasonal and charter flights to other destinations.
