The US-based chain has 19,400 franchises around the world but none on Swiss soil.
But that’s about to change, Marco Schepers, a representative in Germany responsible for the company’s expansion told the Blick newspaper.
The chain is negotiating with suppliers and franchise partners in Zurich and other major Swiss cities, including Basel, Bern, Lucerne, Geneva and Lausanne.
Schepers said KFC was actively seeking ideal locations in such places as motorway rest stops, train stations, airports and large shopping centres.
It’s not the first time the Kentucky-based chain has ventured into Switzerland.
In 2004 it opened two outlets in French-speaking Switzerland but they folded after a short period.
KFC is making renewed efforts in a bid to capitalize on the growing appetite of Swiss for chicken, with consumption per person rising to 12 kilograms a year from nine kilograms in the past ten years, Blick said.
The newspaper noted that at least one other restaurant business is also looking take advantage of the trend.
Cooperative Swiss retail giant Migros is planning to increase fivefold the number of its restaurants specializing in chicken, called Chickeria, the daily said.
KFC's Schepers is meanwhile convinced that the Swiss will be attracted to the chain's restaurants.
He told Blick that already, many Swiss-Germans cross the border to patronize a KFC franchise in Singen, Germany.
