Saga, which roughly translates as 'fable' or 'story' in Swedish was the highest climbing baby name on the annual list, which is compiled by Sweden's number crunching agency Statistics Sweden.
Coming 21st in the 2014 table, it leapt to fourth place in the rundown of most popular names from 2015, released this week.
The name has been around for centuries and is believed to have been used by the old Norse goddess of poetry and history, who is also known as Frigg.
However it seems too much of a coincidence that it enjoyed a revival last year as Nordic crime drama The Bridge (known as Bron in Swedish) scored record ratings. The show's protagonist is Saga Norén, a smart but unusual detective who works on crimes taking place either side of the Öresund Bridge, which links southern Sweden to the Danish capital.
Margareta Carlsson, a demography researcher for Statistics Sweden, told The Local that she had personally made the connection but that there was no data to prove the link.
“When we produce the statistics on names and in this case for those names given last year, we get all the information from the official registation documents given to the Swedish Tax Agency,” she explained.
“Me, since I watched the series The Bridge and I loved it I thought 'this is because of The Bridge' – for me that was obvious. But we don't have any statistics on this because we didn't ask people why [they picked certain names]”.
Elsa was top of the list for the second year running. The name is shared with the lead character in the Disney movie Frozen (known as Frost in Sweden), which is set in a cold Nordic-style climate.
“Yeah when she was new at the top of the list everyone in my office who has small children was saying 'oh that's the Frozen character' but I didn't know that at the time because I don't have small children,” said Carlsson.
“Of course I do now, but again, we don't know if there is a link.”
Traditional Swedish name William was the most popular choice for newborn boys in Sweden in 2015, taking over from Lucas which dropped to second place.
